3 advantages of owning your own caravan
Owning your own caravan opens up a whole new world of possibilities for unforgettable trips. It combines flexibility, comfort and financial benefits, making your holiday more independent and relaxed.
- Lower purchase and running costs
A caravan is often the more cost-effective alternative to a motorhome – both in terms of the initial purchase and ongoing running costs, such as maintenance and wear and tear, vehicle insurance and road tax. - Local mobility
Once you arrive at your holiday destination, the caravan remains unhitched, whilst your own car is freely available for all your excursions. This means you are completely independent of local transport and can enjoy your holiday to the full. - Long service life
On average, a caravan is kept by its first owner for much longer and also finds a new buyer more quickly as a (older) second-hand vehicle, partly because the purchase costs are significantly lower. Furthermore, caravans are less subject to trends or technical developments. As they do not have a motor, they are also exempt from stricter environmental laws or similar regulations, which has a positive effect on their lifespan.

Compact caravan
A compact caravan is a small, manoeuvrable caravan that is particularly well suited to singles and couples who spend a lot of time outside the caravan. Despite its small size, it offers all the essential amenities – sleeping, cooking and seating – cleverly arranged within a compact space. In most cases, however, there is no bathroom. Thanks to its low weight, it can be easily towed by smaller cars, is more manoeuvrable on campsites and saves fuel.
Two-person caravan
The two-person caravan is a compact, fully equipped caravan designed specifically for couples or solo travellers. It offers all the amenities you need for comfortable travel, whilst allowing you to remain agile and flexible when towing it with a car. Some models also feature a fold-down bench seat that can be used as an extra sleeping space if required. If you’re looking to enjoy a cosy and practical caravan experience for two, this is the ideal solution.
Family caravan
A family caravan is a spacious caravan designed specifically to meet the needs of families. It offers ample space for several beds, a practical kitchenette, a comfortable living area and often additional storage space for luggage and equipment. Thanks to well-thought-out layouts, such as bunk beds or flexible seating arrangements, it allows for comfortable travel with children without compromising on comfort or freedom of movement.
New or second-hand caravan?
These questions will help you choose
The decision between a new or second-hand caravan depends on your personal needs, your budget and your travel plans. Whilst a new vehicle offers maximum customisation and state-of-the-art features, a well-maintained second-hand caravan can be a particularly cost-effective and immediately available alternative. The following questions will help you make the right choice for your next trip.
- What type of vehicle do you drive?
- What is your budget?
- How do you plan to travel? Alone, as a couple, or with the whole family?
- What type of driving licence do you hold?
FAQ: Frequently asked questions about buying a caravan
Prices for caravans vary greatly and depend on factors such as size, make, model, layout and specifications. It is therefore impossible to quote a standard price. However, affordable new entry-level caravans currently typically start at well under €20,000 as standard. There is virtually no upper limit. Large, luxurious caravans or those intended for commercial use, such as by fairground operators, etc., can easily exceed €60,000 and may even approach the €100,000 mark.
Our experienced consultants will be happy to take the time to work with you to find the caravan that perfectly suits your needs and budget.
The caravan is one of the timeless classics among recreational vehicles. It combines the comfort of a home on wheels with the flexibility offered by the towing vehicle. This means you can enjoy everything you need whilst on the move, whilst also being able to set off on spontaneous day trips. What’s more, the initial cost is generally much lower than that of a motorhome – no wonder caravans remain so popular.
When buying a caravan, you should pay particular attention to its size and layout, specifications, weight in relation to your towing vehicle, storage space and sleeping arrangements, as well as your budget and running costs. This will ensure that the caravan is suited to your travels, your family and your individual needs.

Whether a new or second-hand caravan is better depends entirely on your priorities:
A new caravan offers the advantage of state-of-the-art fittings, a full manufacturer’s warranty and the option to customise the fittings and extras to your liking. It is particularly ideal if you value the latest technology, design and a long service life without any previous use.
A second-hand caravan is generally much cheaper to buy and is often available immediately. If it has been well looked after, you can still enjoy many years of driving pleasure – at a lower financial cost. What’s more, this may allow you to choose a higher-spec model than your budget for a new caravan would permit.
In short:
- A new car is the right choice if you want state-of-the-art features and a full warranty.
- A used car is worth considering if you want to save money but are still looking for a reliable vehicle.
We would be happy to advise you in person on which option best suits your plans and budget.
The type of driving licence you need to tow a caravan depends on the weight of the caravan and your vehicle.
With a Class B car driving licence, you are permitted to tow caravans with a maximum authorised mass of up to 750 kg.
If the caravan is heavier or if the combined weight of the car and caravan exceeds 3,500 kg, you will need a Class B96 licence (extended trailer combination) or a Class BE licence (for larger trailers).
If you hold a Class 3 driving licence (as issued up to 1999), you are permitted to drive both of the above combinations.
It is important to check the maximum authorised mass of the towing vehicle and caravan before purchasing or setting off on your first journey, to ensure you are travelling safely and legally.
The terms ‘caravan’ and ‘mobile home’ are used interchangeably and there is no real difference between them. ‘Wohnwagen’ is the German term, whereas ‘caravan’ is used internationally.
